HAHAHA you got to really admire some of the Open Source Community and their Pontificating Bullshit that they spew…
If you don’t know .. Google just bought a not so well known company On2 Technologies that makes Video Codecs most of us have on our computers right now…
A What?
Video codecs are the software that interprets the video file on your drive or being downloaded and converts it to a format that your player can display.
Why are they important and why is On2 very important? Well On2 spent a lot of time & money to develop compression technologies that allow the streaming of videos and without their work and the work of others in the industry sites like YouTube, hulu Ustream and the rest would be an impossibility.
Since most of you have windows movie maker you probably have saved your videos in different formats. All of the formats are compressed to some extent but if you have noticed if you select one format over another file size will be half or less.
Well what if there was no compression at all? Then viewing video on the internet would not be possible … but even so viewing downloaded files on your computer would also be impossible and the same goes for any digital device like a DVD player hooked to your television…
Google and On2
So, because video codecs don’t generate a lot of money On2 has been trying to market services in the past couple years… unfortunately this two is not generating enough money to keep them alive…
Rather then see a whole group of great computer programmers and engineers have to get $7 an hour jobs at Walmart Google bought them for something like 150 Million dollars which is nothing today.. crap our government spends 20 times that every second and its not helping anyone in risk of losing their job or who can’t find one.
So… now the Free Software Foundation assholes think that Google should open source this technology just because it’s in their mind the right thing to do … oh those evil capitalists who make half of a half of a half of a percent off of every product sale … NOOOO
I guess the Free Software Foundation will be purchasing the building that the On2 developers work in … and providing free cars and homes and .. ARE YOU FRICKING KIDDING ME???
Lets get this straight there is a TON of money in the Open Source community.. as much or more then in commercial ventures.
I mean seriously guys people got to work and eat and have a life where the hell do you get off telling Google to open source anything…
You are the same type of people that want Banks to reduce debts on people who took out loans they could never repay. While the rest of us work every day to make a life..
You are sickening…
Lets get a little background on probably the best known Open Source Icon.
According to Wikipedia:
Linus Torvalds (Linux / Redhat) was born in Helsinki, Finland. Both of his parents were campus radicals at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s. Torvalds describes himself as “completely a-religious atheist”, adding that “I find that people seem to think religion brings morals and appreciation of nature.
The guy is a multi multi millionaire that has highly protected his ownership over the most recognized open source project in history the Linux Operating system with his Linux Mark Institute that watches for misuse.
In reality none of that detracts from Linus.. The fact he grew up in a home of radicals and is an proud atheist that markets a product calling it freeeeeeee but makes million!…
But the fact is Linus has a wife and kids and he has to feed them and put clothes on their backs and send them to school so they too can become proud atheists…
What is sickening is when so much money is made and it is ignored….
AND It is not just Linus getting rich in the Open Source community.
You have people like Matt Mullenweg who has created a small WordPress empire … sure the software is free to download just like Linux… and for the most part there are no real restrictions…
But come on… the guy is flying around the world attending meetings at various resort spots living a really sweet life off of something that is free to download… there is money there and lots of it..
Yea sure free BUT he leverages it…
He like Linus has no real support staff… the community does all the work for free.
He like Linus leverages free product against his paid services…
ALL OF THIS IS FINE AND GREAT BUT!
Nothing is free in this world.
So when a 100-200 million dollar deal goes through and the Open Source Vultures start circling it is time to get out the shot gun and start defending your own…
There is no reason that Google needs to do anything… especially give away something they just spent a quarter billion dollars acquiring… let alone all the future expenses they will have trying to support On2 in the future.
Remember People have to EAT
